Just OK was the consensus. We had lunch, was nothing special. I don't need to return.

Los Potrillos is simply the best Mexican restaurant in Santa Fe. Being born and raised in California, mostly by a Mexican family who where my babysitters, I thought I knew good Mexican food - boy was I wrong! A local woman from Santa Fe told me about Los Potrillos and am I glad she did. Los Potrillos is not a New Mexican restaurant, it's Mexican and very much like a restaurant that might be found in central Mexico. The food is simply the best! Especially the Ahogada Chile - a poblano chile stuffed with hamburger, raisins and pecans or walnuts in the chefs secret sauce served with wonderful vegetables. The first time I had it was truly a When Harry Met Sally moment - if you've seen the movie you'll know what I'm talking about. It was wonderful, the sauce was truly amazing. Lately I've tried the Albondigas soup - oh my goodness - the best I've ever had. It's an extremely large bowl with 4 huge albondigas (meatballs) and vegetables in a wonderful broth; served with all the homemade corn tortillas you can eat. I always have to take at least half of it home but that's ok because it's even better the next day. They make their own tortillas, both flour and corn and they're exceptional too. In fact, everything I've ever had at Los Potrillos has been wonderful. The staff has always been friendly and the service is good - they are usually busy, but if you need something someone is always available to ask. I've eaten there a lot and taken visitors, friends and family and everyone has been pleased. I highly recommend it. Decent prices too - especially considering what the restaurants on or near the Plaza cost. Oh, and they have a big parking lot and that's like gold in Santa Fe.

I am visiting from Austin Texas and tried this restaurant on my first night in Santa fe and was so pleased. My grandfather and I had the Molcajete am pastor and Chiles en nogada and they were incredible. The Molcajete was this spicy pork and grilled pineapple dish served with a tasty pineapple salsa and the chiles end nogada was a super tasty stuffed poblano pepper with an amazing sauce that I absolutely loved I could eat a whole bowl of this nutty sweet sauce. The chips and dips (2 totally different salsas and a really tasty avocado sauce) were great too but those two dishes were an amazing end to a wonderful first day in Sante fe. Totally different from the texmex I am useful and totally wonderful and a force to be reckoned with. Next time I visit Sante fe I am coming back here its that good.

Los Potrillos is a great Mexican restaurant. Genuine Mexican food! Great for the family. I ordered the steak n eggs which was great. The flan was delicious. The home made tortillas were by far the best I've had. The service was good. If you want to try real Mexican food come to Los Potrillos! :) if we ever come back to Santa Fe we will definitely come to Los Potrillos again:) My only complaint was: we had been watching a movie on the flat screen for a while and one of the waiters changed the channel upon request of some other customer. We asked her to change it back because it was almost over, she asked her manager and he refused to change the channel, And he was rude about it. So if you don't mind what's on the flat screens you should be ok.

Just passing thru town and couldn't stand the thought of another Applebee's lunch. Asked a local where was a good family restaurant.... We have 3 kids under 9yrs. Old. It was easy to find, we were seated immediately, drinks and chips with 3 delicious salsa's. Our lunch came out in 8 min... Yay! The food was tasty... My husband and I had steak tacos. The only complaint was that they put cheese on the tacos.... Not sure if that is the norm or since we are gringos they assumed we wanted cheese??? The tacos were still tasty. If you are passing through support a locally owned business and stop in! PS nothing against Applebee's.... It is our road trip "chain restaurant" of choice. We just really try support small business:)

Had a great dinner here. Fajitas and queso were excellent and flavor authentic to tex mex food from South Texas. Clean and prompt service. Did not care for their choice of music.

We LOVE Los Potrillos! I have two favoritre restaurants in New Mexico, Rancho de Chimayo and Los Potrillos. We've eaten there twice, once for lunch a couple of yearss ago and once for breakfast on our most recent trip. I don't recall exactly what we had during the lunch visit, but the Eggs Los Potrillos and the eggs scrambled with machaca on the recent visit were both great choices. Hoping to make it for dinner next time we're in town!

When traveling to Santa Fe we almost made it out to be a lose. Until we ate here at los Potrillos. Compared to everything else we tried that Santa Fe had to offer, this had to be the best. Services is warm and friendly. Quick on drink refills. Food is as good as it gets in this category. The corn tortillas were hand made. Plus they gave such a perfect amount of tortillas. We didn't have to ask the waiter for more. Salsa taste authentically home made, which is good. Meat was of good quality. Gorditas of cheese with beans and rajas de Chile are the best! This is one of those places that once you have filled up on the food. The bill comes and you feel good. You feel it was worth every penny. I so hate the feeling of eating at certain places and when the bill comes your like, damm. I feel ripped off. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THOSE PLACES. If you looking for an authentic Mexican place while in Santa Fe this is your place. Now mind you, if your looking for the taco bell type, over priced, washed down Mexican food place, there's plenty in downtown.

This is where the locals eat. I have often wondered where to get a more home-style New Mexican meal in Santa Fe. I am sure a lot of people stay on the tourist track by eating on the square, Canyon Road, or Cerrillos Rd. I may have passed this place several times over the years but thanks to Yelpers I discovered the extensive menu that makes Los Potrillos an interesting stop. It is smaller that it looks from the outside but we waited only a few minutes for a table. Don't expect anything more that an amateur level of service and a noisy family atmosphere. The food is very New Mexican, large portions, and spicy chile. I would never order a salad here but the soup selections looked wonderful. Enchiladas, tamales, and grilled meats are the pillars of the menu. My expectations for an authentic meal were met.

Went to Los Potrillos today, what can I say I am not a fan. Had the chicken Tostados absolutely no flavor here. Chicken cut up so small you could hardly see it, or taste it. Refried beans were luke warm. Hubby had the cheese enchiladas, they were just Ok nothing special. There are to many other good restaurants to try, we won't be back. The chairs are ridiculously hard to sit on.

Delicious! A proper Mexican restaurant, but not suitable for vegetarians as their menu are meaty.

  • Karen D.

Yep, it's just as good as most Yelpers have said. We got there about 5:30, and got the last table. The waiting line started after that. The service was good, even though the servers were busy with a table of 20, plus rhe rest of the tables. I had the poblano chili with the ground beef, walnuts and raisins ( forgot the name) and it was very tasty. My only complaint was that the poblano chilis weren't fully seeded. The sauce was unique - slightly sweet and a bit creamy. My husband had the skirt steak (again, forgot the name). He said it was excellent. The flat screen TVs were somewhat of a distraction, especially since our table was between the TV and a young boy who was intent on watching the wrestling match. I felt like he was watching us eat the whole time. However, the volume was very low, so you weren't trying to talk over the TV. The food here is not your run-of-the-mill Mexican food. That's why we will come here again.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Santa Fe...therefore the world. Red and Green chile that had a lot of kick and wonderful flavor. I love trying all of the different takes every restaurant has on red and green chile. This restaurant's chiles deliver. The corn tortillas were phenomenal We had some stuffed with the carne adovada and another version with the steak. Both were beyond excellent. The pork was already so spicy and delicious in the red chile sauce. The margaritas are simply perfect.

This is a wonderful authentic Mexican restaurant in Santa Fe. We found it on a trip through for some shopping with my aunt and cousin. Amazing food. huge menu. and much to my delight... a GREAT house margarita... (I rarely like house margaritas, but this one was WONDERFUL) Our waitress was very patient and very informative, (we struggled with the menu since our Spanish was not great. the pictures helped a great deal and the ambiance was FANTASTIC. I highly suggest this place. the food is authentic, and amazing. We asked for a large container of the jalapeno, avocado dip to take with us. It was to die for!

I'm pretty sure that this is my favorite Mexican (not to be confused with New Mexican) restaurant in Santa Fe. Everything i've had here is tasty and there's a rib plate that is excellent. I really appreciate that I can gorge on homemade tortilla chips with 3 different types of salsas while i wait for my food. I've always thought pretty highly of the ambiance as well. Big wood chairs with horses carved in them and the general feel of a Mexican hacienda. If I recall correctly, I believe there's a saddle strategically placed somewhere in the restaurant as well. So in other words, I get to pretend i'm an equestrian parlaying at my estate enjoying a feast for a king. I'll also add that the service has always been great.

Should have paid more attention to the other AZ people. Needed my Mexican fix. Started w the guacamole. Looks like they were short so added1full onion to it. I got the taco carbon need w whole beans. Tacos were ok, but the whole beans...there were more HOTDOGS in it then beans. Hotdogs. Partner had enchiladas colores. Thought the refried beans were 'Frito Lays' can from potato chip aile. Never again.

My family went to new Mexico for a family vacation. We stayed at the el Rey inn and needed dinner so I yelped this place, read the reviews, and walked to this place. Gotta say the food here was AMAZING! Kinda pricey but I tell you, you won't be disappointed with your food. Portions were pretty big too! Friendly staff! I'd go here again if I went back! Staff and food were awesome. The menu had a wide range of Mexican food. The thing that caught my eye was the fajitas de camaron. There was a picture there too! I'm a vey big seafood fan so I ordered that. Super delicious. I made sure to save room for dessert too. Flan was delicious!

What a let down. Lots of 4 and 5 star reviews and I was craving some good Mexican food so I went to check it out. I've had better Mexican food out of food trucks in Los Angeles for $4.75. It just simply wasn't very good at all. These people that are giving it 4 and 5 star reviews simply do not know what good Mexican food is. Oh yeah, skip the Margarita. Worst drink I've ever had in my life.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Ok, so the ambiance isn't the best. The food, however, is top notch. I would highly recommend the vegetarian burrito. That thing is freaking awesome. If delicious, lick your plate, mexican food is what you search for - look no further.

The first thought that came to my mind as I walked in to this place was "If the food tastes as good as it smells, then I am in for a treat." Oh I was in for a treat alright, I just underestimated how good it was going to be. I could not decide what to order. Everything on the menu sounded very good. I asked the server to help me out a bit and, after much deliberation, settled for the Chile Relleno en Ahogada. It is two chiles stuffed with ground beef, walnuts, and raisins topped with a one of the chef's special sauce and a side of rice and vegetables. The sauce was so unique and delicious! It was slightly sweet and nutty; a nice contrast to the savory chiles rellenos. Although the rice was good, I could have done without it. The chiles and that awesome sauce (which, I kept trying to figure out what was in it all the while I was eating it...) stole the show. I also asked the server if I could taste their Pollo En Mole (shredded chicken smothered in mole) because I have heard that it was one of the best. Wow, that mole was excellent. It had multiple layers of flavors that came together in such sweet harmony. None of the flavors overpowered the others. I can definitely trade a bowl of Texas chili for this pollo en mole. Talk about comforting! The place itself is very simple, humble, and very clean. The prices are extremely reasonable, especially for the large portions that they serve. The servers were friendly, helpful, and willing to make their customers happy. I will definitely make a stop by Los Potrillos next time I find myself in Santa Fe.

We were in Santa Fe this past October (2011) and discovered this restaurant. I spied it as we were headed down Cerrillos road to the RV park. It just "felt" like a good place to try. If I hadn't relied on intuition, we never would have eaten here. When we asked both locals and shop owners to recommend a good place to eat, they kept directing us to chains. Chains? YUCK! Well, MOST chains are just cacadoodie. Our plan was to use the public transportation to get us to downtown Santa Fe to do some exploring (great bus service btw). Just so happens to be a bus stop out in front of the restaurant (it was meant!). We ended up eating there three times (nearly three visits in a row). There is no Mexican food in San Diego that even comes close to this. This is southern Mexico cuisine? Not sure. Appears to have more tropical ingredients in some of the dishes. I should have written down the names and descriptions of the dishes but I didn't. Everything we tried was just fantastic. To start with, the waiter brought us chips and three salsas. There was one dish in particular, served in a REAL molcajete that was memorable. Marinated pork and pineapple. With a pineapple salsa. Wonderful. The chile rellenos came with something next to them made from hamburger, pecans, and raisins (?). I am always put off when I see burritos and tacos made with hamburger instead of shredded beef (not the case at this place), but this was along side the chile rellenos and it was very VERY good. I make a huge exception here for THIS hamburger mixture. Dessert? Tres Leches of course. Yummy. And nicely presented. All 3 times. :o) My husband and I chose 6 different menu items overall (in those three visits) so we could sample each others dishes and try as many items as possible. Great wait-staff. Beautiful mural on one wall. We love Santa Fe and now we love Los Potrillos!

This place is closed on Wednesday's---so don't waste your time trying to go on a Wednesday night! (I made that mistake). I did however go back the following night, and enjoyed it immensely. I went early evening before it was busy, and the service was good, and the food was EXCEPTIONAL. I had the cheese enchiladas (called something like zecataca enchiladas) and they were DELICIOUS. Yelp did not lie about this mexican restaurant, it is authentic. The enchiladas were to die for and cheap at that! I had it with the red chile, which tends to be a little spicy, but grab a little sour cream if you can't handle it and it will cut the spice some! Yelp was definitely right on this place! It is a must-go!

  • Deborah S.

Traditional Mexican - a bit greasy, but decent flavors. Friendly and attentive staff... extensive menu... oddly, the guacamole was served with cilantro, onion, and chopped lettuce... fresh handmade tortillas were warm and tender... worth a revisit indeed!

    (3)
  • Rennie C.

We must have caught them on an off night. The queso fundido appetizer with chorizo was a congealed blob, and even the much Yelp-applauded tortillas, did nothing to enhance the flavor. We had 3 different types of enchiladas, and all were bland. We love all types of Mexican food. Except this. Yuck. Just yuck.

    (1)
  • D.T. B.

This was probably the most authentic Mexican food we had while in New Mexico. Chips and the three types of salsa they serve are delicious. My three tacos were fresh and well-seasoned and my husband loved his chili relleno. However, the rice and beans were not seasoned very well, and some of our food did not come out very hot. Besides that, the food and service is good and worth a visit. There seems to be many locals here, which is always a good sign.

    (3)
  • Jill B.

This is Mexican unlike most restaurants in Santa Fe. I don't like New Mexican cousine. My only complaint would be their prices being a little high. I had guacamole and it was $13 a bit high and the avocado wasn't ripe. The enchilada sauce was wonderful.

    (4)
  • Stacey G.

This place was great! We ran across it when trying to find someplace less touristy to eat at and were impressed. The fajitas were especially good, but my husband also really liked his enchilada dinner. Service was pretty good if a little on the slow side, but everyone was really friendly and the food made up for it.

  • Leahi M.

Other than the slight language barrier if you don't speak much Spanish, this place has great authentic Mexican food! The Chile Enogada is my favorite! Try the horchata too...

    (4)
  • Barbara S.

We stopped in to just satisfy our chips and guacamole craving. Chips were a tad greasy, but I've had worse! The guac was good, but different. I've never had shredded lettuce in guacamole before. But the dip itself was good. I did have a margarita - Los Potrillos makes theirs with wine - not tequila. It tasted fine - but I'll take a traditional margarita over a margarita -wannabe any day of the week.

Just a head's up: this restaurant is named "Los Potrillos" not "Los Petrillos"

My wife and I were driving through Santa Fe and thanks to yelp four this place. I had the Gorditas and she had the enchiladas. Both of which were very good.

    (5)
  • Chris U.

Good food, good service. The horse carved seats were also fun (following the theme of the restaurant). We had veggie enchiladas and eggs rancheros. The food was spicy (flavorful) without being overly hot. Very generous servings at a reasonable price.

  • V E.

After reading numerous reviews, this place is what many described. Great food, selections and service. The gorditas and enchiladas plates are worth giving a try. I recommend this restaurant to all, to give it a try.

Stopped in here on my way to the airport. I ordered the chicken salad. There were only 2 choices of salads on the menu. The other choice I believe was a cold shrimp salad whatever ...it sounded gross..The menu was several pages long.. a mini book..The salad was probably the worst salad I've ever had put before me in a restaurant and yes that includes fast food salads. It was a bed of iceberg lettuce with big chunks of the stem (I picked them out and could have made an iceberg stem lettuce salad that a rabbit wouldn't have eaten. The lettuce wasn't rotten but not cut up and was from the part of the lettuce you would normally throw away! Next ...the tomatoes.. they didn't even take the time to cut those up either. They tasted like those beef steak tomatoes you get from Costco that haven't ripened yet. The grilled chicken strips were ok but once again they were long pieces that needed to be cut up. The only "normal" or acceptable item on this salad was a cut avocado. I looked around for our server to seriously ask for a chopping board and knife but it was really busy and she was not around. I took off my tomatoes and chicken and cut it up on my chip plate. BTW The chips and dip were ok. Nothing special. We did get 3 different salsas. They were ok nothing special again. They were in tiny bowls that you could hardly get your chip into but they were complimentary. I know you are thinking why would you order salad at a Mexican restaurant ? Well 2 days prior while passing through I stopped at Cafe Castro's (see yelp review) down the street also in Santa Fe and I ordered a pulled pork taco salad. OMG,it was fantastic. Red juicy tomatoes, spring fancy greens, diced cucumbers and mouth watering pork..drum roll ...all for $7!! I should have stuck with Cafe Castro but wanted to see what all the hype was about on Yelp. I only wasted $12 at Los Potrillos but left hungry on the way to the airport. If you are only going to have a couple of salad options why not make them great? To top it off the bathrooms were nasty. The trash can was overflowing and toilet paper was all over the floor and other things I won't mention. I washed my hands before and after my meal and it was the same both times. I can't imagine giving this place 5 stars on any level -price, food, or ambiance. I checked the sign and location and I was at the right place.

  • Nick S.

Not fancy, just great food. When locals come to a place...not for happy hours Margaritas, but because it's a dependable, fair and good place to eat....it's a place I want to be at as well. Great food here.

  • Shelly M.

Ordered enchiladas de colores, which were excellent. One of the better Mexican dishes I've had in a while. The service was great and the food came out quickly. Comfortable atmosphere. I would be a regular if I lived closer.

My partner and I were really impressed with how good the food is here. I have been on a hunt for some great Mexican (not New Mexican) food since we moved to Santa Fe over a year ago. I think that we have officially found our spot! Not only was the food delicious, the service was great too!

  • HighStandard S.

If you don't eat here, you're crazy. Menu is unlike anything else in Santa Fe. Try the mixed seafood grill for 2. Chicharrones in green sauce rule! The cheese stuffed shrimp wrapped in bacon are well worth the cholestoral. Really interesting Mexican menu. Service is friendly and attentive. Horchata drink is refreshing and not too sweet. Smoked pork chops were a disappointment because I didn't know to expect what we simply call ham, but otherwise, really enjoyed the 3 meals I had here.

  • A B.

I wanted to avoid tourist traps, and managed that with Los Potrillos--most if not all of the people in there seemed local. The food was good--I don't eat meat, so the options were limited as expected, but I was fine with that. I came hungry and left content. The shortfall was the service. They were friendly enough, but slow and lacking in attentiveness. I wanted to ask for sour cream after my food came, but the waitress didn't come back to check on things, no refill on water, and then I had to hunt her down to ask for the check. The restaurant was a quarter full, so she wasn't stretched. Enjoyed the food (once), but next time would probably try somewhere else for something different.

  • Cynthia L.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! I've lived in New Mexico my whole life, and this was one of the BEST Mexican restaurants I've ever visited. Frankly, I've been very disappointed lately, because of the LACK of good, authentic restaurants. This was such a wonderful surprise for us! I ordered chicken fajitas, and they were excellent! Hubby ordered an enchilada plate... loved them. And, we brought an order of gorditas home for later, as well. Yummy! Definitely loved the servers -- great, friendly, attentive! Restaurant itself was clean and very nicely decorated. We will be back, as often as possible! :o)

Having eaten authentic Mexican food over the years, I was hoping that the food would be better, but this was one of the more disappointing meals I had while in the Santa Fe area. The restaurant is in an old Pizza Hut, but has been deceorated to not even look like it. The chips and salsa were okay, but the little salsa cups were so small, it was hard to dip your chips into them. Bigger salsa cups would have been nice. I tried two different entrees: Mole Poblano with chicken and the pork and pineapple dish served in a molcajete. First, the mole poblano was served with shredded chicken. The mole was too sweet and did not have any tones of spiciness. I would have preferred more chicken in the dish than just shreds of chicken. The pork with pineapple was bland at best. Serving the mix in a molcajete does not make this dish exotic or taste any better. It is pretty much a build your own tacos al pastor dish, but I have had better in numerous places. The service was kind of slow. Perhaps we oredered the wrong items, but I would classify this place as an ordinary run of the mill Mexican retaurant not worthy of some of the 5 star ratings.

  • Madelyne S.

This place ended up being really conveniently located near my hotel room so my boyfriend and I could walk there and back intoxicated, without fear of a dui. On a more serious note the place was full, the food was delicious and portioned generously, and the staff worked as a good team. The reviews don't lie though-the margaritas are so watered down and for 7 bucks they shouldn't be.

  • Angie C.

We were searching for a different restaurant but happened to stumble onto Los Potrillos. We were on a breakfast/lunch hunt and were pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Chilaquilles Marta and my husband ordered the Casas Grandes dish. My Chilaquilles were a bit salty, but the rest of the food was great. My husband was in heaven with his asado, eggs, potatoes and beans. Service was great, very attentive. We will come back again one day.

Awesome! Our dinner this evening was excellent. My husband had the mixed fajitas, and I had the chicken chile rellenos. After reading the previous reviews we decided to go there, and not to another restaurant recommended at our hotel. This is a Mexican cafe, with a really nice atmosphere, and very friendly staff. The chefs, which you can see working so hard in the kitchen presented a delicious and appetizing meal. The margarita was ok, but not top shelf. We would probably stand in line if needed to get a table here next time we pass through Santa Fe. My husband & I have decided that if we rely on reviews, then we must also share our experience. Thank you previous reviewers.

Pretty good. I would like to try more on the menu as it looks very authentic. Maybe on the way back through. Kind of expensive though. 11.95 for ceviche tostada? Come on! I will add to this when I try something else here. Service was good. Tortillas were great. Food was flavorful and ok. but not spectacular by any means.

We are visiting Santa Fe and stopped here at Yelp and Super 8s recommendation. The entrees were fantastic. The Boyfriend got beef fajitas, which were excellent and didn't taste just like everywhere else. I got chicken with pineapple sauce. I was intrigued by the idea of pineapple with Mexican food but I had no idea what to expect. It was fantastic! On the other hand, the chips weren't great and the guacamole was full of letuice and cilantro so what looked like a huge serving turned out to be average sized. Maybe that's the way they make it here but when I'm paying $9 for Guac I expected to get my avocado's worth! Cute decor, great menu, good service, but if we pass through here again I think I'd like to try someplace different.

Every time I am in Santa Fe, I find myself coming back to this place. Its out of the way but definitely worth the visit. They serve Mexican not New Mexican food. I've had a few dishes here but my absolute favorite is Chiles Rellenos en ahogada. Its a pair of stuffed Chiles with this unique somewhat sweet sauce. Its addictive. The other dishes are well prepared and seasoned with fresh tortillas. The service is usually good but not outstanding. I think because there are a lot of locals they are not in a hurry but they will take care of you.

The chili relleno and cheese enchilada I ate were good, but I wished I ordered the fajitas my wife got. Lots of red and green peppers and excellent seasoning. Pretty quiet early Saturday evening, looks less like a tourist place than a lot of Santa Fe restaurants. Prices were very reasonable.

This place is AMAZING. We spent one night in Santa Fe and we Yelped to find great Mexican food. The Yelpers were right on the money. We are from Southern California and we eat tons of Mexican food. Literally daily. That said, Los Potrillos has the best Mexican food I have ever eaten. Their food is muy sabroso and they also offer traditional dishes that are otherwise hard to come by. The con tortillas are light as air and probably the best I have ever had. The chips and salsas are incredibly delicious. The horchata is clearly fresh made and not from a mix. The Sopa de Res tastes exactly like it did when we lived in Nicaragua. The Enchiladas de Colores melt in your mouth. I would eat there every day if I could. I am so sad that we live so very far away. This place is a must!

Best salsa we had on our whole trip. Lots of locals, and Spanish speakers - felt very authentic. Chicken mole was too sweet for Dorothy, but Brett liked it.

We've been to Los Potrillos (Spanish for foals) four times over the past year and are totally impressed with the creativity and breadth of the menu. Great seafood, including Camarones A La Diabla, which I've only ever had as a secret option in a San Francisco area restaurant. Today we went for the fourth time; Los Potrillos had a new menu item, Cabrita (goat), which is described as "goat meat marinated & smoked with peanut & almond sauce." Fabulous meat with a great sauce (and accompaniments). I also had the Chile Rellenos en Ahogada: chile rellenos stuffed with ground beef, walnuts, and raisins with chef's special creamy sauce. The sauce was amazing; don't know if it's Mexican but it's certainly tasty! Bottom line: Great food at a reasonable with reasonable service. Los Potrillos will continue to be a regular spot.

The food here is excellent. My fiancé and I ordered the mushroom appetizer and it was perfect. It comes out with corn tortillas that you can eat with the mushrooms like a taco or dip in the sauce. We split the cheese enchiladas with red chile sauce, which we also loved. Everything we ate had a great, unique flavor. Would come back anytime.

We tried Los Potrillos hoping that it would be authentic Mexican food and we were not disappointed. I lived many years in Mexico so I am always looking for authentic. I had Bistek Ranchero and it was awesome and very authentic. My wife had Chiles Rellenos with Chicken and they were outstanding too. Their beans were authentic and their corn tortillas seemed freshly made. The service was good. I'll be returning to this place often.

This is true Mexican fare, Zacatecas Mexican to be exact. By the way many of the Old New Mexican families are decended from Zacatecas. The lamb stew is wonderful. good fresh tortillas. i always get the watermelon drink. it has a true Mexican feel to the place. the wait staff is always sweet. remember, its not northern new mexican cuisine. try it for something different while you are there.

On our way back from Taos Pueblos, having to break from a thunderstorm, we ended up having dinner at this little dive in Santa Fe. It's authentic Mexican food and we loved it. This place was filled with a lot of local Mexican food lovers who've had it with New Mexican food (more Spanish style then Mexican = a little more bland, no cilantro and not too spicy). Our servers spoke just enough English, the food was crazy good and the servings were all right. Decor's OK but that's not the reason why you go there. We found this on Yelp and had a lot of the foods that everyone else recommended. Chiles En Nogada/en Ahogadas are the best!

I am a Chicagoan who visited Santa Fe for the first time a few weeks ago. This is an amazing Mexican restaurant. The food is good and cheap. The restaurant is in an old Pizza Hut location, so the dining room is small. We had to wait for about 10-15 min, but I would recommend going early to avoid the lines. I love that they provide four salsas with the complimentary chips.

We found this place on Yelp and are so glad we decided to try it! We ate here twice and loved everything we had both times. Highly recommended if you're in Santa Fe or close by!

We picked this place because the logo was awesome...although I forget what the logo was now. I could tell this place was going to be awesome because it was crazy inside.

Marias had like a 45 minute wait, so I said lets go to this place on Cerrillos that I always pass by. It's a Mexican restaurant and the parking lot is always packed. We check it out. What a fantastic move. I never used to see any ads for this place and considered it somewhat of a secret. I've noticed that they have ads in The Reporter now and won top three "Best of Santa Fe" 2007. You get three different salsas with your chips n salsa. The menu is huge and includes steak(if I remember correctly) and seafood(definitely). This is a real Mexican restaurant in Santa Fe, maybe even the best. Closed on Wednesday.

We went here while in Santa Fe, it was awesome! We have fish filet in mango sauce and shrimp tacos, and we've never had better mexican food. I'd love to live near this place.

We ordered way too much food because there were so many delicious looking things on the menu! So, we got: nopales, posole, that yummy goat stew, pork ribs... TOO much food! Our waiter was laughing at us. But you know, we were on a mission to eat as much amazing food in NM as possible so we dove in. The only thing I didn't like about this place was their beans, they didn't taste like beans, they tasted like meat! Too bad. Other than that, I think I managed a few mouthfuls of nopales, posole, a mouthful of the stew and one and a half ribs (which were gigantic). It was delicious! We had the leftovers the next morning at the hotel, for breakfast...

I've lived in Santa Fe 16 years and I'm a foodie. We have a lot of great restaurants but I put Los Portrillos at or near the top, certainly for the price. The food is outstanding, I've never had a bad meal and I've eaten there dozens and dozens of times. Always take out of town guests there. Anything you order of the page of chef's specials will amaze you. The fajitas (while kind of a gringo type dish) are the best in town. The Chiles En Nogada (they spell them en Ahogada) are to die for, don't miss it. If you go, don't order the standard fare although its excellent. You'll miss some truly creative and unusual sauces and dishes.

I wish I'd gone here more than once on my trip, because there are a lot of unusual items on the menu. I had chicken in pecan cream sauce. The sauce was very sweet, and delicious on the rice too! Excellent fluffy sweet flour tortillas.

The food here is delicious! I was in a frantic search to find a good local place on my way back to Colorado and stumbled across this one. Cozy, informal setting, friendly staff, and great authentic Mexican food. Can't beat that!

We were traveling through and looking for a restaurant with authentic New Mexico dishes. Boy did Yelp help in finding this gem. The three salsas are very distinctive and tasty. I found the creamy tomatilla salsa most delightful. Everyone in our party ordered a differtent dish. The Chili Renenos Dona Maria were marvelous and the grilled chicken with a spicy-sweet pineapple cream sauce was scrumptious. If you are in the area... give it a try.

Awful mexican restaurant. Nothing else to add. If you like it, that means you dont know anything about Mexican food. Furthermore, I ordered a strawberry margarita, and they served the margarita for $6.95 with the cheap strawberry mix you can buy anywhere for $5.99 the bottle. Deceptive really! Nothing is good here. AVOID!

    (1)
  • Pam H.

Very casual restaurant serving great mexican food at a very reasonable price. Amazing gauc. We were four and none of the dishes disappointed. Stick to the beer as they don't have a liquor license so the margaritas are made out of wine. I'll be back every time I visit Santa Fe.

Real, authentic Mexican food, as opposed to New Mexican food. A local haunt, I wanted to return here, but not enough time.

Very good Mexican food in Santa Fe. There's quite a few New Mexican restaurants, some of them excellent, but few Mexican places. The enchiladas were great, the beer was cold and we all had a great time.

  • Conor M.

This is the best mexican restaurant in Santa Fe. As long as you're not a Masshole you'll love it. The pork ribs are out of sight, the goat is top notch, as are the fish and shrimp dishes. The wait staff is awesome.

This was a spontaneous choice for my friend and I after we rejected a different option for Mexican (I forget which one) in Santa Fe. When we walked in, we were greeted by cowboy hats and boots galore, as well as what we call "horse chairs." The place looks authentically Mexican, with lots of ranch and horse paraphernalia, making the place not only interesting to look at but also interesting to eat in. When we went, the crowd was about half Hispanic and half white. The food was good and there were lots of authentic Mexican items on the menu. I would definitely go again! The shrimp cocktail, which we didn't have, looked delicious... The only sketchy thing were some men in the restaurant giving us the eye, but I guess that is no fault of the restaurant's!

  • Ralph F.

After consulting Yelp reviews, we enjoyed a TERRIFIC choice of menu items at this fabulous restaurant. Since we arrived on Good Friday, we were pleased to see such an array of seafood selections. I had shrimp stuffed chiles and my wife ate vegetarian enchiladas. Both were delicious! My chiles were not breaded, but cooked perfectly allowing the delicate flavor of the peppers to shine. The next night, I tried the Molcajete am pastor and she ordered chiles en nogada. Once again, absolutely WONDERFUL favors. We have several favorite eating places from many years of visiting Santa Fe, but this time, we really found a treasure. Thank you, Yelp reviewers, for giving such "spot on" advice. We will surely return to Los Potrillos.

Let's get right to it....this place was lame. Poor service to start. Everyone seated when we were and others seated after had their dinners before we had our order taken - and the place was not overly busy. Ribs were "fall-off-the-bone", probably because they were par-boiled and so fatty they slid off the bone. The special fish soup was large.... And filled with mostly surimi. The whole mess was overcooked to the point that the shrimp were tough, the actual fish had no taste, and the veggies were paste.... The surimi were actually unfurling and looked like pasta noodles. What mussels and pulpo there were obviously came from a can - NASTY!!! Add to that a handful of salt to make the soup even more special. Store clear unless you have no clue about what taste buds are for.

We never have had a bad experience here and always very attentive service, fajitas were the . Enchiladas chicken were great. We had 6 altogether and with one desert came to 60.00! Dam good price. Very attractive staff to top it off, thanks guys

Definitely a local spot; this is some of the next Mexican food we've ever had! We came for dinner and thought it was so good we came back for breakfast the next day. The chile relleno is amazing and outstanding service. We will be back!

Looking for an early Sunday dinner, we decided to stop here and give it a shot! After passing it a hundred times we were extremely impressed and feel lucky we had such an amazing experience. The service was exceptional and the food to die for. We shared the ceviche over a couple of ice cold Modelo especial's served with frosted beer mugs to make our experience on this beautiful sunny day that more enjoyable. We will definitely be back to taste more of this delightful menu.

One of my favorite Old Mexican food restaurants in NM. Their arrachera steak melts in your mouth! It is GLORIOUS! The last times I ate there, the flavor had gone down a notch, but it still was outstanding. Drools . . .

Los Potrillos is one of my local favorites. Great New Mexican meals at affordable prices, with a variety of dishes to choose from. My favorites are the Camal de Cazuela, a tortilla and cheese-laden version of corn chowder; and the Ceviche Tacos, served fresh with just the right amount of lime and herbs. My husband prefers the spicy New Mexican fare; his Los Potrillos go-to meal is the cheese Chile Rellenos. Last but not least, the unique atmosphere is worth dining in. Dining on authentic fare surrounded by murals of life on an idyllic Mexican horse ranch, saddles, chaps, and hats, one feels right at home at Los Potrillos.

When my daughter and I went on a cross country trip, I knew that we'd be stopping in Santa Fe and my one desire was to eat "real" (meaning, not like I'm used to in South Carolina) Mexican food. We asked our motel clerk for a recommendation and this is the place he said he goes to all of the time. The parking lot was packed with cars with NM license plates, as well as the restaurant, which is a good sign to us. I had the enchiladas (beef/chicken) with red and green sauce, aka "Christmas" style. I loved the deep, spicy flavor of the red sauce that went wonderfully with the enchiladas. When I tried the green sauce, tears poured from my eyes, my nose dripped, my throat closed, and I breathed fire. I think the waitress saw my expression because she brought me over a stack of warm tortillas and said to eat them because it would help with the heat. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and I look forward to getting back to NM sometime...I'll just eat the red sauce. No more green for me!

Friends had recommended Los Potrillos, so we gave it a try for lunch. I wasn't impressed. The dining room is dark and probably hasn't seen an update to its kitschy motif in decades. The laminated menus are worn and tattered, and this should have been a clue for the whole dining experience. I had the three enchilada combo (Enchilada Colores) and my companion had the chilis rellenos. My beef, chicken and cheese enchiladas were sparse on the fillings and heavy on the sauce. Unfortunately, the rellenos was nothing special either. I'll stick with Cafe Castro (right up the road) for their better food, service, value and dining ambiance.

  • Thomas S.

My sense is that this restaurant was fabulous at one time but has settled into a comfortable rest on the laurels position. I tried a variation on chile rellenos and they were so so -- I have cooked this dish many times and if I can do better than a famous Mexican restaurant, there is a problem. They need to pick up their game if they want to keep an eye on authentic.

This place is a pretty traditional Mexican place as far as things go. That means the food isn't NEW Mexican, which is "more" Americanized and def more fatty, and, to my mind, more delicious. But I liked a lot of the stuff going on here. Evidence: when you get tortilla chips, you get THREE sauces: queso, red chile, and chipotle. That was awesome. The queso is room temp but good. And the red chile is solid. Evidence: the service here is top notch. People here care about your experience. You get checked on, but you don't get interrupted too much. I ordered the chile rellenos, which was Mexican style (which means it wasn't too deep fried in delicious fattiness, and it wasn't slopped with chile sauce and cheese). It was pretty good. The chiles were a little seedy, however, and I'm not sure they have to be? Overall, the ambiance and the service win out. The food is three stars but the service is five.

  • Jim F.

Authentic Mexican food that all should like. We had the shrimp enchiladas and enchiladas colores, which is red and green sauce on three enchiladas. One chicken one beef and cheese to top it off. Excellent dinner reasonably priced. Only down side was the salsa which was thin and would not stay on the chip.

    (4)
  • Jim H.

This place ain't New Mexican it's straight up coastal Mexico so if your looking for Green Chile Chicken enchiladas keep driving down the street to Castros but if you want fish soup with homemade tortillas this is the place. Very very good. Wait till you try the fresh chips with every meal. Not for everyone but if you want to change it up a little this is the place.

Excellenf food - having never eaten Mexican before I had no idea what I was ordering and do not speak Spanish so it was an adventure. the food was great, inexpensive and the staff were friendly. I would definately eat here again.

Decent Mexican food - expected better from reviews...Margs were huge and strong but definitely from a mix. I liked my enchiladas but they needed more sauce. Green chile is my thing but the red chile here was better. My husband had the fajitas and said they were fine but not the best he's had...the tortillas were great though.

Food good but couldn't get over how bad service was. Waitress gave us total attitude. I'm native Hispano but hubby Anglo. Only one at restaurant and as unlikely and stupid as this sounds I felt like we were being ignored by wait staff and stared at by other customers. We felt completely ignored and uncomfortable there will never go back.

Terrific food and service in october. Recommended by a friend who is a local. There is a tamale thing that is served in a bowl that i kept stealing samples from my husband and i had a poblano stuffed with raisins and meat and covered in a cream sauce that was great. Everything i saw go by looked great. The chips were very good and hot. Strongly recommend.

Discovered this restaurant at the end of our stay in Santa Fe. Our loss! It is off the hook wonderful. One of those rare eateries that you just want to work your way down the menu because you know you will enjoy it all! The very best in real Mexican food. (Watch out for the grilled super HOT jalapeno peppers that garnish your food choice!)

Not the typical Santa Fe cuisine. Seriously authentic, and the diners certainly reflected that. Huge and interesting menu. It was hard choose, and I instantly wished I had ordered something else. It all looked so good! The staff was extremely nice and helpful, though only a couple of them speak English. Price was a bit high, but it is Santa Fe so that's a given.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Santa Fe. Go elsewhere if you're looking for New Mexican. The food is always delicious, and the prices are great. Service is always prompt and attentive. Try the al pastor, either as tacos or the molcajete, and the horchata. The tlalpan soup is perfect for cold days. Any of the seafood dishes are worth a try, but I prefer the stuffed fish (without cheese). My daughter loves the chicken flautas and tres leches cake.

Best authentic Mexican food in Santa Fe. Best Zacatecan cuisine i've had in the US! If you want a wonderful and unique non-New Mexican meal while in SFe, stop in here. The shrimp molcajete is to die for.

We are visiting for our anniversary and this was our first dinner out. Great food and strong drinks. We got a plate to share for two, I don't remember the name but it had ham, bacon, chorizo, red &green bell peppers and was served with a specialty quesadilla and the beans were amazing. I would recommend this place to anyone stopping in Santa Fe, great food and atmosphere.

  • David N.

Some of the best food comes from humble surroundings. I don't eat chairs (one reviewer is concerned about a hard chair) and I didn't really care for Santa Fe (home to a bunch of aged, wrinkled and hopeless hippies and yuppies) but I would come back for this restaurant's chili rellenos in a heart-beat. Pablanos are a favorite dish of mine ever since eating my first in a little cantina in Monte Vista, Co. back in the early `60's and cooked by a wonderful grandmother, and Los Potrillos brought back those memories for its food. The pablanos are stuffed with ground beef, raisons and walnuts and it and the accompanying veggies are smother in a gravey that adds a sweet honey taste to it. Others may not give this place a good rating for any number of reasons, but for its food, I am a happy and satisfied man. Oh! My wife and I enjoyed a full meal for under $30.

Had read the reviews of this place and decided to give it a try. When we arrived things were busy but no more so than other places. Weren't really sure if we needed to put our name in with a host or what the seating process was. Stood at the host counter for 5 minutes completely ignored. It wasn't like no one was there. A man across the counter (3 feet max) literally avoided eye contact with us, and did not acknowledge us for a solid 5 minutes while we patiently waited. Finally decided they didn't want our money and left. With so many other fantastic places on the same road including the Pantry, Adelita's, or the king of them all Horseman's Haven, why would anyone go here and be treated like that? You and your money deserve better, go elsewhere.

The two stars are given because, there is no lunch menu. Who wants to spend $12 to $15 for lunch? The pollo en mole was nice tasting, but too watery with no spice. The rice tasted like I instant rice, nice flavor but lacking substance. No military or senior discount was available. I don't recommend this restaurant for lunch. Thanks for reading. I've been here before but was never very crazy about the food. I thought I would stop by and give it one more try. Well I'm an Anglo woman and I decided to have lunch on my own. The waitress would not listen to me and pretty much ignored me even when asking to be seated at a specific table. I waved to her and sort of guided her to where I was going to go and asked if it would be alright to sit at this table since it was not very busy. She was not mean nor was she very friendly. I wanted to order the enchiladas but instead of getting three enchiladas I asked if one can be substituted for a chile relleno. She said that they would have to charge me an additional 3 4 dollars extra and didn't give me a reason why it was additonal. but when I inquired I found out that the chile relleno was much bigger. Really do u have to charge me more when I'm already paying $14 for lunch for so so enchiladas. If they can't make the enchiladas exciting I'm going to assume that the chili rellenos wont take my breath away either. Upon first look at the enchiladas I was slightly disappointed at their appearance since they looked somewhat dinky. This place inspires me to go to the market buy groceries and make lunch for myself. Too expensive for lunch and for what you get especially with the attitude or just to be tuned out.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
